The Brightest Lanai Lighting

Trust the experts.

In the rapidly developing LED lighting world, you’ve undoubtedly seen impressive claims about “the brightest” along with claims as to how many theoretical years or hours the product will last. Of course it’s easy to be impressed with well promoted marketing hype. Ironically, these claims tend to contradict each other. Consumers often forget, or don’t realize that LED’s create heat, one of the biggest enemy of LED’s and is a key contributor to LED failure. The same applies to outdoor lanai lighting. For a lighting manufacturer it’s a simple task to add more LED’s to a light design to make it brighter, but unfortunately all that added heat builds up, and ultimately over time damages the LED’s, thus dramatically shortening the original projected lifetime of the light. In other words: more LED’s = more light = more heat = shortened lifespan
The conclusion? Simply building a brighter light without a well engineered thermal design is not better (at least for the lifespan of the product).

One of the keys to manufacturing quality lanai lighting that will last for many years is a well calculated balance between light output, heat generated, and the dissipation of that heat generated. The answer is certainly not “cram as many LED’s as possible in there”. At Sunset Lighting Design, we designed our renowned Sunset Sconce™ Lanai Lighting not for short-lived marketing hype, but rather for the appropriate amount of usable light, that promotes maximum lifetime of the LED’s.
Also, keep in mind this is going into your outdoor living area. Most customers will opt for elegant ambience over stadium lighting staring you in the face, and it’s always a good idea to take your neighbors into consideration.
